The shape of the journey

One night in Gorski Kotar, then one night near Plitvice. This route needs road transport and an unhurried transfer day.

Our editorial pick: October, subject to weather, daylight and the routes open during your visit.

Day 01

Begin under the trees

Arrive in Gorski Kotar and choose a short woodland outing that suits the conditions and available daylight. Golubinjak can be a starting point after you have checked current access.

Stay locally and give the evening to a warm meal and an early night. For a two-day break, remain in Gorski Kotar and explore another local route instead of adding Plitvice.

Day 02

Leave space for the road

Travel towards Plitvice with time allowed for the transfer. Check the next day's park information before setting out, and choose accommodation that makes your planned entrance practical.

Use the afternoon to settle in. A short local walk may be enough; the important decision is to keep the following day available for the lakes.

Day 03

Give the lakes the day

Follow an official lake route that is open and appropriate for your mobility, the weather and the daylight. The pleasure lies in the changing reflections and woodland as much as in reaching the next waterfall.

Wear footwear suited to wet surfaces and leave a sensible margin for the return journey. Park services and route access can change with conditions, so follow the guidance you receive on the day.

Before you set out

Gorski Kotar and Plitvice are separate areas with a substantial road transfer. Check open forest and park routes; use the current official park programme rather than assuming every boat or trail operates.
