The shape of the journey

Use Zagreb for two nights, or split your stay between Zagreb and Varaždin to reduce return driving.

Our editorial pick: October. This is also a useful November direction when indoor visits are confirmed.

Day 01

A city day with room to wander

Begin in Zagreb's historic centre and choose a museum that interests you. A single exhibition, a leisurely lunch and a walk through the central parks make a satisfying first day.

Save Maksimir for a longer park visit if you prefer green space to another indoor stop. Keep the evening close to your accommodation so the city can be enjoyed on foot.

Day 02

Into castle country

Set out for Trakošćan with its current access information to hand. Focus on the castle and the park paths that are open, leaving time to appreciate the landscape rather than promising a complete lake circuit.

Reserve a regional lunch and return at a comfortable pace. This is a day for one substantial excursion, not a string of castles.

Day 03

A different northern city

Give Varaždin's historic centre a morning of its own. Explore the streets, façades, gardens and cafés, adding a museum visit only after confirming admission.

Allow time for lunch before travelling onwards. If your return route makes a Zagreb base inconvenient, spend the previous night in Varaždin and let the journey finish here.

Before you set out

The Trakošćan site reports a partial lakeside-path closure. Follow the open route and current signs. Confirm museum access in Varaždin before making it central to the day.
